WCMS Students Connect with Holocaust Survivors

Mrs. Heather Rivera’s eighth grade Language Arts classes at Worth County Middle School recently connected with history in a very real way. After reading The Diary of Anne Frank and Number the Stars, the students engaged in several class discussions and cross-curricular activities which piqued their interests to learn more about the lives of the people who endured the Holocaust. Mrs. Rivera and her students then contacted Aaron Berger and Judy Schancupp at The William Breman Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum (http://www.thebreman.org/) in Atlanta, Georgia who specializes in education on Jewish history with an emphasis on Georgia and the Holocaust. The museum emailed biographies and photos of Holocaust survivors to Mrs. Rivera. This study led to a unique project that resulted in her students writing letters to these Holocaust survivors.

When Mrs. Rivera and her students read and discussed the profiles of the Holocaust victims and looked at photos of their lives and felt compelled to reach out to them following the classroom discussions, each student selected a survivor to write a heartfelt letter to. Each letter was done in steps. According to Mrs. Rivera, the students were required to revise, edit, evaluate, sequence, conclude, and exercise other writing techniques previously taught in her class throughout the school year. Mrs. Rivera contacted the museum again and told them about the letter writing project. The museum offered to deliver the students’ letters to the survivors. Mrs. Rivera commented, “I would say these students have truly exercised their academic skills as well as their interpersonal skills with this task.” In addition, the students have certainly touched history and the lives of these special people who survived the Holocaust.
