Good Morning!

We, as parents, all look forward to our children graduating from high school.  We also hope they make the right choices in life to pursue a better life for themselves, such as going to college and/or getting a successful job.

Unfortunately, not all children are afforded these same opportunities to pursue after high school.  Have you ever thought about the 1 or 2 or even 3 or 4 special needs young adults in their cap and gown while sitting at a graduation ceremony?  These are the children I would like to bring to your attention.  These young adults can be afforded opportunities to help transition to the next phase in their lives.  However, for many, the funds are not there.  For others they have been on a waiting list for years waiting for availability.  These children have families hoping for the funds to come available before graduation. Without these funds after graduation, what future does that child’s life hold?

All I’m asking you to do is take 5 minutes of your time and complete a survey.  This survey is called “Unlock the Waiting List.”  The survey will voice the need to our Governor that Georgians with disabilities need more community-based support services so that fewer dollars are spent on institutional care, and more dollars are invested into homes and communities.

The importance of this survey is to try to get young adults that have been on a waiting list for extended periods of time to even be considered for one of these programs.  Not all families need or want to put their children into an institution.  This in turn causes even more life altering situations and issues to arise, such as a parent having to quit a job, a job that is really needed due to finances and/or health insurance needs.

Question 2 of the survey asks what you think is the critical issue facing Georgians with disabilities today.  Well, for those that an institution is not an option, it is critical they receive a waiver in order to be accepted in a community-based support service.  This would allow him/her to live at home with his/ her family and receive support services within his or her community.

So please take five minutes to take the survey.  Help get the word out that these children also deserve the opportunity to pursue the next step in their lives.

Thank you in advance.

Please go to the link below and complete the survey:
